Bathroom Folding Shower Doors

Bathroom Folding Shower Doors

Folding shower doors have become more popular, as many homeowners are looking for ways to increase the value of their homes through updates. Updating your bathroom can be as easy as changing the depth of glass in your shower doors, or even changing from framed to frameless. Remember that when your home is appraised with folding shower doors, the frameless versions can add up to $2,500 in equity overall to the home.

Folding shower doors have many options including framed and frameless, differing depths of glass as well as designs in the glass or even upgraded materials. Framed doors sit on a track much like sliding doors. The difference between the sliding and the folding types is that there is a hinge in the center of each piece of safety glass. The safety glass in folding doors comes in depths of 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8 inch variations. This makes a difference as to the type of frame that can be used, and the largest difference is in the prices. Retailers charge more for thicker glass, as well as differences in length of the hinged areas. The average width of one panel of safety glass used in hinged shower doors that only have two panels is 24 inches, while larger areas may require more doors panels be used to cover the area. For tubs or stalls that are wider than 48 inches, it is recommended that a professional be sought to complete the work as custom doors will be required.

Glass used for these bifold doors ranges in designs from obscure glass, frosted glass to clear glass or even custom design etching. Smoked glass and unfinished glass are commonly found in more modern frames, while frameless models generally use clear glass. Framed doors have options for materials, as many less expensive models are made of anodized aluminum. Brushed nickel, brass, wood appearance or even plastic can be found as well as gold tone surfaces. For frameless doors in your tub or stall, there is no enclosure but the hardware used for support at the top and bottom of the doors can also be purchased in these same finishes and materials. However, the tracks used for the top and bottom of the frameless doors will be sealed, and therefore the interior of the shower tracks should be protected. The enclosure options vary, as many people opt to use the magnetic enclosures for folding doors. These enclosures consist of a magnet on the inside track and metal on the inside of the door matching up correctly to provide a secure match. Even when wet, these magnets work as well as they do in any other environment.

Frameless Shower Doors

Frameless Shower Doors

You'll have many decisions to make when shopping for a shower door, one of which is whether you want it framed or frameless. Both of these types are unique and offer different benefits in functionality and appeal, which is why it's important to take the time to choose the right one. Here, we'll take a look at frameless shower and doors and see how they compare to framed.

In terms of price, framed shower doors are going to be cheaper than frameless. One of the reasons for this is because framed doors usually use a thinner and cheaper type of glass which is supported by the framed enclosure. Using a thin framed glass door is completely functional, but it doesn't look as finished and high-quality as thicker glass doors do.

Another problem with using framed shower doors is that mold and mildew colonies will thrive in the hinges where you can't clean. This will lead to a dirty-looking shower in which you may have to replace the hinges later down the road. If you do decide on a frameless door, do your best to keep the frames clean by frequently spraying them with a one part bleach, 9 parts water formula. This will help eliminate the microscopic invaders.

If you really want your shower to look its best, you should consider installing a frameless door for the shower. These doors are free-standing and don't require the support of an aluminum frame. The result is a higher-quality, more durable and overall better-looking door.

How To Clean Your New Glass Shower Doors

How To Clean Your New Glass Shower Doors

A new frameless glass shower door is just what your bathroom needed. However, after a few months, soap scum and mineral build up can be hard to clean. Finally, when you get it clean, it can be hard to maintain, especially in high traffic bathrooms. So there are some steps you can take to minimize your time cleaning them to keep that beautiful clean new look for years to come. There are also other options for your frameless glass shower doors like special glass for your or protective coatings, both may eliminate most of the time needed to clean.

Standard glass is porous and over time can be damaged by soap scum, hard water, and even humidity. So it is important to maintain daily care of your shower glass. Doing just a little bit of work each day will keep you from having to spend a great deal of time cleaning the shower glass. This process can also stop potential permanent damage to your shower doors. Using a shower glass cleaner, letting sit for a minute and then wiping down your glass with a soft cloth is really all it takes to maintain a virtually brand new looking shower. Some experts suggest using a squeegee to "squee gee" the water off the glass after a shower, but a soft cloth will due the trick as well. The only other important step to take to maintain your shower door glass is to keep your shower ventilated so it does not hold moisture. Moisture within the bathroom and shower enclosure can cause lingering dirt and grime to cling to the glass causing that grimy look you see on some shower doors. So just sprays, wipe, and ventilate daily and your shower glass should stay beautiful for years to come.

Give Your Bathroom A Face-Lift With A New Frameless Shower Door

Give Your Bathroom A Face-Lift With A New Frameless Shower Door

Choosing a frameless shower door to install in your bathroom can completely change the look of your bathroom. You can make your bathroom really stand out and transform it into a real eye catcher. There are a couple different choices for the shape of door that best fits your taste. Deciding to go with a frameless shower door allows you to get rid of aluminum frames and other unsightly materials that take up room, rust over time, make cleaning a harder process, and even collect germs.

Frameless shower doors are just that, a shower door without a frame. A header, hinges, clamps, and track will support the panels of glass. Water proof silicone will seal the glass and the wall on the edges on the glass panel, this gives it a watertight seal with a smooth edge that is clear.

Frameless shower doors are safe tempered panels of safety glass that can withstand impact. These thick panels of safety glass are usually at least 1/4 inch in thickness, the chances of breaking one are pretty slim. If for some reason they were to break, you wouldn't have to worry about sharp shards of glass falling or cutting you. When tempered safety glass breaks, it separates into small uniformed chunks of glass with smooth edges.

Sliding glass doors are the most popular choice. They are two fixed panels with one sliding panel. Most traditional bathtubs use this type of door.

If you have a walk-in style shower, a bypass frameless door is a great choice. This style consists of fixed glass panels and a header to support. The hinged panel door swings open allowing entry into the shower. This style is a popular choice for corner shower units.

If you have a custom designed shower or bathtub, you can have the door designed to fit your exact measurements. There are many shapes to choose, tall, narrow, square, rectangle, or even a mountain top or random wave shaped door.

Once you have decided on the shape, you can move on to the color or tint you like the best. You can choose from about eight different styles of glass, a clear, bronze or gray tint glass, or one of several different types on textured glass.

How Etched Glass Shower Doors Can Easily Increase The Value Of Your Home

How Etched Glass Shower Doors Can Easily Increase The Value Of Your Home

A good number of folks that own homes realize that when modernizing the house, the toilet shouldn't be ignored. Hinged shower doors, including etched glass shower doors, may be used as an alternative for framed or frameless sliding doors and old, worn-out shower curtains. This contemporary look may be added in value assessments of houses to the tune of around $1k towards the value in the home. Perhaps it's for this reason that hinged door sales have raised drastically during the last 24 months.

Great For Those With Mobility Issues
Hinged shower doors provide the identical tracks since the sliding type, however the hinge in the heart of both panels of glass permit the doors to spread out right into a broader space. These are really well suited for people with flexibility or body weight difficulties and therefore are not able to move around within the small two foot area that's associated with sliding doors.

While open, unlike sliding glass shower doors, hinged doors occupy under 4 inches wide, still leaving around 44 inches of space within the tub or stall area. Because most tubs and showers are typically measured at 4 feet wide, it seems sensible that you'd want as much area available to enter the shower as you can get. Using hinged variations that open wider and enables individuals with mobility issues get the help needed, all while leaving plenty of space within the shower to move around - these are all great arguments for the sliding shower door.

Glass Shower Enclosures

Glass Shower Enclosures - The Varied Aspects About Glass Shower Enclosures

Glass shower enclosures are a great way to spruce up the d├ęcor and appearance of your bathrooms. With so many designs and style choices available in the market today, it can become a tad difficult to select the appropriate one of choice. Here are a few guidelines to get you started.

Higher Ended Ones
Glass shower enclosures that have a lower content of iron are more preferred by consumers and hence these fall under the higher ended spectrum of the selection. Most of these kinds of enclosures come with very thick grades of glass in them. The reduced levels of iron in these enclosures imply that the glass has more clarity and increased color balance ratios. Compare this with standard enclosures with a greenish tinted glass and you will quickly see why the low iron ones are so much in demand.

Frameless Paneled Varieties
One other very popular type of glass shower enclosures is the frameless paneled varieties. These come replete with clean, minimalist lines and a fantastic tempered glass inside. The base is made of acrylic and has outer edges replete with recessed channels. In fact, this is one of the unique and distinguishing aspects about such enclosures. It is also one of the factors, which contribute to its beauty and sophistication. Due to these recessed channels in these enclosures, it provides a unique perception as though the platform of the shower is raised.

Shower Seal Replacement Can Transform a Leaky Shower Screen

Shower Seal Replacement Can Transform a Leaky Shower Screen

Shower seal replacement may sound like a tricky procedure if you are not a keen D.I.Y. expert. However it need not be too arduous if you get the right shower door bottom seal to fit your shower screen. Just replacing this simple fitting on your leaky shower screen door can make a huge difference to your bathroom and help eliminate water damage on your bathroom floor. You may not have realised that the perished or damaged glass shower door seal was the culprit responsible for causing the leaks which are so annoying and irritating.

Shower usage in the last thirty years has increased sharply as people have become more aware of water usage and how much is used to fill a bath. Many people are now on metered water and can see for themselves the different amounts used by an average bath and shower. Fitting a shower over your existing bath is a popular and space-saving alternative to a separate shower stall. A bath screen, with a bath screen seal, will protect your floor from water leaks more effectively than a shower curtain, particularly if you are installing a 'Power' shower. Screens can usually be fitted to either end of the bath, and are available in full or half-length designs in clear or patterned glass. However there is the problem of ensuring that the shower door bottom seal is working effectively or you can end up with leaks and the troubles that they cause.

On average, a household with two people taking a shower every day would mean that the shower could be used up to 712 times a year. So it is no wonder that shower seal replacement is needed after a couple of years. The glass shower door seal is used to prevent water from flowing out of the shower on to the floor. It helps to protect the bathroom floor from damage which would be caused if water constantly leaked onto the floor. Obviously the fit of the shower door bottom seal needs to be perfect and if it starts to degrade or is damaged you will be faced with problems.

Why Glass Shower Enclosures Should Be In Every Modern House

Why Glass Shower Enclosures Should Be In Every Modern House

The tradition of bathroom suites was simply demarcated areas for the toilet and the shower area and a bit of space in-between for the vanity, the mirror, and the sink and storage cabinets. Designers today however are coming up with more versatile refreshing and modern ideas, giving good looks for the bathroom. One of them is moving away from the common shower curtain and even the shower door to specifically a glass shower door.

Glass seems like a dangerous thing to have in a bathroom, what with the risk of it breaking and one slipping on the surface. Shower enclosures are the opposite of that. The glass used to make the door is not your usual glass but it is manufactured specifically to support its functions. The glass is sturdy allowing it to be hinged and create a door. The edges are smooth for the frameless doors and the framed doors have steel frames to increase durability.

The benefits of glass doors for your shower are many, beginning with the minimal amount of space they take up. The design allows the shower area to be accommodated even in the smallest of spaces without making you feel confined to a small area. The glass allows you to see the rest of the suite giving you the illusion that the enclosure is bigger than it really is.

Benefits of a Frameless Glass Shower Door

Benefits of a Frameless Glass Shower Door

If you're like most people, you'll be very familiar with a 'standard' shower enclosure or door. One made of glass and framed with metal, that is. The glass used in these doors is traditionally quite thin and therefore inexpensive. However, the glass needs the metal frame in order to support and strengthen it enough for it to fulfill its' purpose.

There is now another option, which is becoming increasingly popular. It is the frameless glass shower door.

This is made out of thicker, tempered (i.e. strengthened) glass. This means that no metal is needed to strengthen and support the door, only to secure the panels to your wall or shower unit.

Benefits:
As the door is made of thicker glass, it will last 3 or 4 times as long as the traditional design. Naturally, this is a huge benefit as it's uncommon for people to replace their bathrooms frequently.

Another clear (no pun intended...) benefit is the look. A frameless glass shower door gives a much cleaner, more streamlined, modern, minimalist look to your bath or shower room.

Shower Doors Can Give Your Bathroom a Unique Look

Shower Doors Can Give Your Bathroom a Unique Look

Did you know that shower doors are available with features that allow you to create a unique design in your bathroom? Most home improvement stores will have several styles on display so you can get an idea of how a particular design may look in your space. You may also find some tools online that help you choose different options to build your own shower design. Consider just a few of the features you may choose from to set your bathroom apart:

Framed or Frameless:
Many modern designs of shower doors are frameless, meaning that there is not a frame surrounding the shower enclosure. The glass enclosure is mounted directly to the wall, allowing for a sleek, smooth look. The glass is a thicker and more architecturally sound structure since there is no frame supporting it. You will still have the ability to customize your look with the hardware design for the handle and hinges.

For a framed enclosure, you can pick from different painted enamel and traditional metal finishes. They are usually less expensive than frameless doors. This type is better at holding water due to the metal structure. Framed styles also allow you to choose from more glass options, so you have the ability to create more of a unique design.

Shower stall or bathtub

Shower stall or bathtub

There are different opinions about what is better to have in the bathroom, shower stall or bathtub, or both. This decision depends on what you prefer.

If you have a small bathroom, the shower stall is an ideal solution because you will thus use space maximally. The advantage of the shower stall is significantly less water consumption.

On the other hand, classical bathtubs are the place for luxury, relaxation and enjoyment. Relaxing in the bathtub is the best way to enjoy and forget about all problems. Your choice of bathtub is a matter of style, but also a matter of space.

Of course, the best would be to have both a bathtub and shower stall, if your real dimensions of space, needs and financial capacities allow. Since this is not often the case, you should make a choice which naturally depends on your personal habits. Contemporary lifestyle and limited space usually suggest that we should opt for shower doors.

Framed and Frameless Bi-Fold Shower Doors

Framed and Frameless Bi-Fold Shower Doors

Bi fold shower doors are those that fold in one place with a hinge, creating two panels. The average width of is a total of 48 inches, the same as the average width of a tub or shower stall. They sit in a track at the top and bottom of the tub or stall in the bathroom, and fold up into about a 4 inch space on either side of the track when opened all the way.

Bi fold doors are normally used in bathrooms or basement areas as a replacement to shower curtains or sliding doors. The sliding type take up more space when open because when open they will still take up 24 inches each, whereas bi fold shower doors only take up about 4 inches when open. This leaves more open area for a person to maneuver into the shower area, and this can be important for those with mobility or weight issues. Prices for bi fold bathroom shower doors will vary based on materials, finishes, installation practices and types of glass.

Many professional companies offer the installation of these in the bathroom. Options include accordion style, magnetic enclosures, framed and frameless models as well as different colors and types of glass. The glass used for all shower doors comes in 3 depths: 1/4 inch, 1/8 inch and 3/8 inch. Remember that all shower doors are made of safety glass, therefore just because the door is thicker does not mean it is safer. All are made the same in essence, and the safety glass that the law requires these be made from has to pass the same testing, regardless of the thickness. So if you cannot afford the thicker glass, you will still have the same safety rating.

It also provides noise and heat insulation, apart from being stylish and modern. The anti-reflection glass is the modern advancement that has suppressed the complaints of glare caused by the glass. This also makes it suitable for making other household items like furniture, chairs, shelves, picture frames, etc.

The glass enclosure is also suitable for custom designing. Colors and decorations can be painted to the glass panels, either by designers or on our own. Some devices or stands can also be fixed or attached to the enclosure. Glass enclosure decors come in two major varieties, the framed panels or the frameless ones. The intermediary ones are the semi-framed ones. These varieties are available to suit the different needs of the bathroom and the various tastes of the individual users. However, the framed ones are more durable than the less framed ones.

Installing a Glass Door Handle to a Shower Door

Installing a Glass Door Handle to a Shower Door

Once you have purchased a glass door handle and have determined that all the pieces are included in the handle set, you are ready to start installing the piece. Before you start installation though, be sure an instruction sheet is included in the sheet. More often than not, you may not have to use these instructions. If you have never installed a glass handle, you will need the instructions.

More often than not, you will be replacing a handle that's already in place. If the glass handle you're installing is identical or similar to the one you're replacing, you may not need the instructions and will be able to do the installation within minutes.

Here is an example of how to replace a glass door handle on a glass shower door.

Your first step is to remove the the old handle and then clean the area from which you removed it. If glue or any other type of adhesive was used on the old one, make sure that any remaining matter is scraped off to allow the new door handle to be installed as smooth as possible.
